The Namesake

Just watched this movie by myself. It was good and one worth watching if you haven’t. This isn’t a party pleaser or an eye-catcher, but definitely worth the watch. A lot of people have probably read the book already, and the movie is from 2006.

It’s basically about a multigenerational Indian family and a son who comes full circle in understanding his identity. It’s long since it starts from parents getting married, to kids getting married, and everything in between. Even though it was about an Indian family, I could see the similarities among Chinese. I liked how balanced the movie felt. Even the scene with the arranged marriage felt normal, and when contrasted with the son’s dating relationship, it almost seemed more right. Well then again, this movie also was largely from the parents perspective. I think after watching this movie, I’ve come to appreciate the story involved with every first generation Asian more. Just the very thought of a parent fighting the cultural tension in order to give their child an opportunity to learn was such an after-thought for me.

When I go back home this break I hope to have at least one conversation about the differences in child upbringing versus what may have been expected.

Gnight folks
