We’re all uncool

i read this article about how we (as christians) strive so hard to be cool. we try to find the ‘cool’ church, the “hip” church and in the end we sacrifice genuine and authentic. do we look for a “relevant” church instead of an authentic community?

i’m having a hard time connecting my thoughts, but i feel like there’s something to be said about “cool.” i know i’ve tried in various ways to be a “cool” christian, or the “relevant” christian. but what am i really doing? am i just dressing myself up?

do we prioritize making church services “cool” and in turn, become cold? i had a thought that prompted me to blog, but i lost it. so uh…

i think what i wanted to write was that God loves us. God loves the uncool. he loves us because we’re uncool. GOD IS COOL, and yet we try so hard to be cool. we try to be God in our own lives, and what’s the point of that? somewhere beneath smooth transitions, cool worship bands, sunday attire, and fun church programs is the most uncool person sitting in a seat who just feels dirty and unloved.

we need to acknowledge our uncoolness, our brokenness, our imperfections, and say GOD, you are not just the coolest being in existence, but you redeem us from our depravity and you’ve made us new. how awesome is that? we are COOL in CHRIST and no longer need to try to be cool on our own. phew

i think i completely left my original thought. my original thought was somewhere along the lines of pursuing “cool” in our corporate church activities, and how that in turn affects us trying to be cool in our private and personal life. like we try to act as if nothing is wrong, or we don’t have problems. have we forgotten that we are all the definition of uncool? the greater we recognize our brokenness, the greater we see the power of God’s saving grace. but sadly, we’ve found comfort in minimizing our brokenness to show our own measly power and self-righteousness. it’s a sad trade
